Broadmoor Flooded
Fall weather is making outdoor painting remarkably comfortable, without bugs, sunburn, nor freezing cold. The tributary through Broadmoor flooded, eliminating edges that formerly defined a receding channel. I'm feeling progress in scaling relative masses to create a sense of depth, keeping color clean with contrast, and having a better handle on the drawing/composition as I gain experience working … [Read more...]
Still-life Series
This series of paintings in oil on paper are done in single sessions working from life in natural light. I am using contre-jour, a French term that means back lighting the subject. The literal translation is "against the day." I first learned about contre-jour lighting in painting class in 1990 and immediately felt drawn to it. There is a warm under-painting in burnt sienna. The color cast shifts … [Read more...]
Thumbnails
I've set aside my ballpoint ink drawing pen to switch to pencil in order to improve my thumbnail studies for paintings. The picture above is a shape outline study; the one below is a value study. Bird Series
In my still-life paintings, I am using casual arrangements of objects in a particular light, working from direct observation, painting all at once, single-day sessions; then move on to the next one on the next day. ABOVE: Bird, oil on paper, 9.25 x 10.25 in, (23.5 x 26 cm), 9/14/09 Bird with 3 limes, oil on paper, 9 x 10.25 in, (22.86 x 26 cm), 9/15/09 Bird with Overcast day, oil … [Read more...]
Charles River, no. 5
Happily this week, a quiet respectful family admired but did not interrupt four painters working outside. Another father enthusiastically fished with his two young kids, frequently reminding them to lower their voices because "the artists are working." Thick underbrush in this area restricts desirable river views and access to a tiny stretch of beach. When I arrived, I was angry to see litter on … [Read more...]
