If you like the way your paintings look as they are, don't take a class with a guy who paints from life every day and will tell you what he sees. Instructor's comments below. ABOVE: North Bridge, oil on paper, 10 x 10 in (25 x 25 cm), 06/07/2010 • ... has bounce; you protected the drawing; bridge is the best part; shape of field not clear; were trees as bright in highlight -- yes or no?; squint; … [Read more...]
Studio Feng Shui
Preparations for the studio open house are in progress. A lucky few arts professionals received invitations by mail. Those who are able to attend will be welcomed on Wednesday for one-on-ones with seven artists. The event will be followed by a Friends & Family open house on a later Sunday afternoon. Artists are one of the last remaining professional sub-cultures hidden from mainstream society. … [Read more...]
Oil Series
I've decided to post fewer photographs of work in progress. Shooting and correcting photographs takes too long, yields poor quality, and interrupts painting. Above is a series of oil paintings done in March. Three on the right are on paper, approximately 10x10 inches; on the left is linen, 20x22 inches. … [Read more...]
Gouache Copies
Periodically I paint small gouache copies of great artists's work. The copies are made using a limited palette — red, yellow, blue, and white — to create approximations from print reproductions of the originals. Aside from learning about subject and relationship, design and facture, the act of copying reveals my emotional response as each aspect of the original is encountered. Temperaments and … [Read more...]
Drawing the Beast
Drawing resumes after work in December was disrupted in part by replacing — three times — a ten year old mac G4 with a shiny new malfunctioning i-mac. A peek behind the flawless curtain of brand image can be shocking, whether it's Apple, Tiger, or the mesmerizing decorative wrappings torn off another holiday season. The desire to believe in appearances persists. “Fancy thinking the Beast was … [Read more...]
2009 Review
Although I made art as a kid and as a student in school, as an adult I did not believe I could paint full time. Cultivation of my gifts, whatever they might be, was only one part of being a daughter, sister, partner, wage earner, friend, and citizen. However, two years ago I decided to give it a try. I began a program of self-directed study to practice art as a profession. It turns out not to be … [Read more...]
Brush Holder and Panels
This post shows two recent projects of making tools and materials for painting. Brush Holder I've wrapped brushes many different ways to protect them from being damaged during transport. A friend sewed her own brush holder that motivated me to make one for myself. My mother taught me how to sew when I was a kid; I used a leftover piece of canvas to make mine. A rigid mailing tube cut to the … [Read more...]
USS Cassin Young
There was a lot to see in this subject: ropes, turrets, anchors, guns, radar. Single session paintings force choices. On the second occasion, it was apparent the ship was in continuous motion, moving approximately 20 feet or more, left to right. That would account to some extent for the varying proportions. ABOVE: USS Cassin Young -- destroyer, oil on paper, 8.75 x 10 in (22 x 25 cm), … [Read more...]
