Events are moving too quickly to post everything from the graduate school program on the blog. Here are highlights. The photographs are snapshots, hand held, daylight. The city paintings are influenced in part by recently reading Don DeLillo's White Noise. The story concerned an "airborne toxic event" hovering over Somerville, Mass, circa 1985. The next series of paintings use only black and … [Read more...]
Project Review
Painting in school quickly developed too many areas of interest: oil landscapes, figure drawing, homework, and the bamboo pen & sumi ink drawing series. I realized drawing is pushing out painting time in the first three weeks. These are all good projects but the MFA degree I am pursuing is in painting, not drawing. Adjustments must be made. The oil landscapes are from my studio window. … [Read more...]
Lecture Series
Once a week visiting professionals from the Boston area make one-hour presentations on their subject of expertise to the MFA painting and sculpture students. So far we have learned about the birth and death of stars from a brilliant MIT physics professor and eaten freshly harvested oysters shucked by the operations manager of a south shore farm. One of the earliest requests made of the graduate … [Read more...]
Class of 2013
Having weighed our decision for a week last month, when I returned home from a painting trip in Vermont Drew greeted me with a banner on the garage celebrating my acceptance into the MFA painting program at Boston University. I am deeply grateful to Drew's many years of encouragement and support; to the artists who recommended and advocated for me; countless teachers, colleagues, friends and … [Read more...]
DeCordova Museum
I am extremely pleased to become a lending artist of DeCordova Museum's Corporate Loan Program. DeCordova Museum was the first museum I visited regularly as a child with my family. In my twenties, I took night classes in figure drawing for several years at the museum's school. The main building is high on a wooded hill overlooking pristine Sandy Pond, a near neighbor of Walden Pond. A former … [Read more...]
ANE / Benn — Conclusion
I was happy with the long sought efficiency of my painting field equipment. The Soltek easel proved to be extremely versatile. It was able to hold two stretched linens at once, providing stability to both while simultaneously painting across them for the diptych shown above. A helpful musician from the "Chamber Music Conference & Composer's Forum of the East", the group that is on campus with … [Read more...]
ANE / Benn — Aerial Perspective
On Tuesday morning it was too hot to stand in the sun but extremely comfortable in a naturally cool spot between two small groves in the south field. While I painted, appearances were made by a marmot, deer, rabbit, squirrel, flock of bluebirds, and harrier chased by a crow. A low flying helicopter made repeated noisy sweeps across the area, possibly taking off from the airport five miles to the … [Read more...]
ANE / Benn — Monday
I decided to extend my extended stay another week to continue to paint outside doing landscape. The final group of door slamming adult students arrived yesterday and began their classes today. It was an extremely humid day. The morning sounds were of oboes and violins coming across the field from Jennings. It brought back to mind a sublime Saturday night free concert of a Shostakovitch quartet by … [Read more...]
