VCCA Train Bridge
Settling in at VCCA, I began by looking around on the first day by taking a walk and a bike ride, to let the place emerge before setting up to paint. After fishing for views with a sketchbook and pen, a pattern is developing. I pack a gouache kit in the morning and an oil kit in the afternoon. The gouache palette is limited to red, yellow, blue and white. I have twice as many colors for oils with … [Read more...]
Titian’s Supper at Emmaus
Boston's Museum of Fine Art is showing an exquisite collection of Titians, along with the work of two other fine Venetian painters, on view through August 16, 2009 — Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese: Rivals in Renaissance Venice. Included is Titian's Supper at Emmaus from the Louvre. A confrontation plays out between a dog and cat beneath the table cloth. The dog is familiar. It is the same type of … [Read more...]
Elm Bank Fountain
First day painting outside this season. Flowers not yet emerged. Bare trees. A few things went right: being outside in 60 degree weather, not cooped up inside for those hours; spending an afternoon pursuing the trial and error process of developing a body of work. I'm willing to let the process show me the path, and show it to others along the way. There are worse ways to spend an afternoon than … [Read more...]
Manet’s Modernity
Manet’s The Railway, 1873, gouache copy, 5.5 x 7.25 in (13.97 x 18.42cm), 2/26/2009 Reynold’s Nelly O'Brien, 1763, gouache copy, 5.5 x 7.25 in (13.97 x 18.42cm), 3/2/2009 Manet is often referred to as the first modern painter of European art, one of many it turns out, due to both his application of artificially flattened thick, abbreviated paint and for his use of contemporary subject … [Read more...]

The Artist’s Valentine Grant
In January of each year since 1996, give or take a year in between, I've made Valentine cards to apply for a unique grant called the The Artist's Valentine. The holiday mostly stands out for me as the opening scene of one of the all time greatest movies, Some Like It Hot. I usually struggle to come up with an appropriate sentiment in the cards — not surprising given the previous reference. This … [Read more...]
Wine and Red Onion
I like what's happening with the volumes and roundnesses in this series of still lifes. Black and white ink drawings like the one below make me wish I could do more etching. ABOVE: Still-life, gouache, 7 x 9.25 in, (17.78 x 23.5 cm), 12/10/2008 Still-life, oil on paper, 7.5 x 11 in, (19.05 x 27.94 cm), 12/8/2008 Still-life, micron pen, 5 x 8.25, (12.7 x 20.95 cm), 12/10/2008 … [Read more...]
