Clara Reading, acrylic-painted paper collage

Workshop Art: Ken Kewley's Looking and Inventing “Separation of the observer from the phenomenon to be observed is no longer possible.” — Werner Heisenberg, 1927 . . . . . . . . . . Participating in a Ken Kewley collage workshop has become a nearly annual event for me since 2015. It is hard to equal elsewhere the quantity and scope of work produced in one of Ken's workshops. The pace is … [Read more...]

New from Vermont

August 14, 2017 by Laraine Armenti, visual artist

Bennington, Vermont continues to inspire me as an artist. This year I returned to Art New England, a Mass College of Art workshop program that convenes on the Bennington College campus each summer. It is a remarkable gift to work every day for two weeks without other responsibilities, far from the madding crowd. The focus yields incremental but essential changes in my work, especially while guided … [Read more...]

NdS Collage

June 27, 2017 by Laraine Armenti, visual artist

My recent collage series is inspired by the great paintings of Nicholas de Staël who was a pioneering figure in mid-century painting. He directed his gaze outward at a time when New York artists and critics were obsessed with solitary struggles of the inner-Man. In his work he reveled in the convergence of sky, sea, and land on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco, Algiers, and Antibes. His … [Read more...]

Four Xmases

February 22, 2017 by Laraine Armenti, visual artist

Although nothing goes out of style quicker than the holiday season, I decided to share four recent collages that I made in January from Christmas cards I received in the mail. By keeping the cards grouped by year, from 2013 to 2016, the commercial and personal graphics of a self-selecting community of friends, relatives, and businesses produced a composite portrait of each year. You may recognize … [Read more...]

2016 Review

January 22, 2017 by Laraine Armenti, visual artist

I was concerned when assembling this review that I might confuse my readers with disparate series of works from this year. To be a generalist also conflicts with good advice. Mark Twain observed, "Astonishing things can be done with the human memory if you will devote it faithfully to one particular line of business." My amateur values — instincts, sensibilities, proclivities, predisposition, or … [Read more...]

Figure in Four Directions

October 1, 2016 by Laraine Armenti, visual artist

Once again this year, I had the good fortune to make art in an intensive workshop taught by Ken Kewley. Titled "Abstraction for Realists — Working from the Model: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Collage, and Sculpture", the workshop was held at Truro Center for the Arts, Truro, Massachusetts, in September 2016.
