ARTIST RESIDENCY CHINA — SHANGHAI, no. 38
The China Art Museum, built as the Expo 2010 China Pavilion in Shanghai, houses an installation originally created for the fair. Based on a 12th century scroll by Zhang Zeduan (1085–1145 AD), the original Song Dynasty painting is one of China’s greatest cultural treasures.
The projection is about 30 times larger than the original 10 x 207 inch scroll. The painting depicts daily life of urban and rural people, animals, vehicles, and landscape at all levels of society engaged in diverse economic activities. Of 814 humans only 20 are women.
Not only is the entire projection animated with movement and sound, but also it cycles through daylight and nighttime conditions. Spectators view the animated wall across a river. It took quite some time while mesmerized by the scroll before I realized the river was not actual water but made of light and sound projected onto a horizontal screen.
