Oil paintings

Here are oil paintings that I presented last week in end of the semester critiques. There are approximately 30 graduate students in two classes. Reviewers include faculty, visiting artists, graduate and undergraduate students, and visitors. Everyone is encouraged to respond to the work and ask questions of the presenting artists. This process provides direction for second semester work.

Repaint

I prefer the results in my work of painting all at once. But a new level of control allowed me to make changes to two paintings from last summer without altering their basic structure.

The top painting was repainted in the top third to improve the color relationships between the background, objects and table cloth. The glass felt too close to the edge so it was removed. I liked the glass and the first egg, but they were sacrificed for the greater good of color and atmosphere. The first photograph was made before the new camera arrived with its more complex light meter. The tablecloth is unchanged in the painting.

Bagel, egg, and tea

The background in the painting below originally had a flat graphic treatment. I repainted it to give it depth and atmosphere. The tomatoes, bag and knife were mostly untouched, only appearing to be different due to photography.

Lately when I am asked how my work is going I say, ‘it’s two steps forward, two steps back.’
