Oil paintings

Here are oil paintings that I presented last week in end of the semester critiques. There are approximately 30 graduate students in two classes. Reviewers include faculty, visiting artists, graduate and undergraduate students, and visitors. Everyone is encouraged to respond to the work and ask questions of the presenting artists. This process provides direction for second semester work.

Mid-term

I was given the gift of borrowing a green and red Japanese kimono wedding gown to set up in my studio with a vase of silk flowers. It’s a spectacular opportunity for color, pattern and drama.

Flowers, oil on linen, 22 x 20 inches (56 x 51 cm), 10/28/11

Flowers, gouache, 6 x 6 inches (15 x 15 cm), 10/26/11

Visual critique homework in response to oil paintings by two colleagues:

Demoiselles d’Hollywood — 3 ages of woman; gouache, 10 x 6.5 inches (25 x 17 cm), 10/27/11

Venus Endormie d’Headphones, gouache, 6.5 x 10 inches (17 x 25 cm), 10/27/11

Our Wednesday night model didn’t show up so students took turns posing for the class.

Pink Jacket and Shoes, gouache, 10 x 6.5 inches (25 x 17 cm), 10/26/11

Hydrangea

Week 2, Bennington, Vermont

My time on the road included a side trip to visit Tad Spurgeon. After years of appreciating his work online, Tad generously let me interrupt his painting time to meet and see his work in person. His studio is a wondrous cavern filled to the brim with paintings stacked and hung on every surface. It is a marvelous workshop of intense explorations. His extensive experiments with materials are a treasure chest of silicas, putties, gels, marble mixing slabs and windows full of countless bottles of aging oil glowing on the sills. Delacroix seemed to be right around the corner, about to be the next visitor to stop by.

The following drawings were created during the second week of the Art New England / Mass Art workshop program at Bennington College, Vermont.

Still life series

In my still life paintings, I’m looking for natural arrangements of objects in a particular light, working from direct observation, painting all at once. Then move on to the next one the next day.
